2015 November Tasting
The Picton Wine Club hosted Wither Hill's winery for their 6th November meeting. Matt Large, the chief winemaker, presented some older wines for members to taste and these were very impressive, this being proved by the member’s purchases this evening.
The first wine was a 2013 Rarangi sauvignon blanc which was quite dry with mineral flavours. This was followed by a 2008 Sauvignon Blanc. 2008 was a very good year for wine quality and this mellow sav blanc was full on the palate with good balance. The following 2011 Cellar Release Rarangi Riesling was another excellent wine and the vines for this are grown hard up on the hills.
The2009 Pinot Gris was a thinner, greener style, a fruit driven wine with a floral nose and is considered a very good food match wine. With all these wines the club enjoys a food match from Le Café. It is quite amazing how each wine and food seems made for each other. This evening we enjoyed Asparagus and Hazelnut samosas, Blue Warehou with Pickled Ginger, Poached Wine & Cheddar Crepes to name some. We also tasted a 2008 barrel fermented Chardonnay and a positively delicious 2011 Nobel Pinot Gris with an admirable balance of sweetness and fruit.
With Le Café’s Venison Tataki we tasted the Taylor River Pinot Noir which had a strong winemaker influence. It was a big, rich pinot, handpicked from the vineyards growing in clay and gravels near the river bed. This was a favourite with is dark blueberry/plum/earthy/oak tastes.
Picton Wine Club meets every first Friday of the month and welcomes visitors and new members. If you are interested in wine come along and enjoy a meeting. Phone Glenys 573 8317 for more information.
